Setting up programs in Jira Advanced Roadmaps (Datacenter)

Following on from our previous article, Getting started with JIRA Advanced Roadmaps, we are going to talk about creating and setting up programs in JIRA Advanced Roadmaps.

JIRA Advanced Roadmaps enables you to build Project Plans, and group project plans into Programs. This needs to be considered up front during configuration, e.g.:

Simple

Complex

Note: Depending on how you have configured your JIRA Software structure and usage, this will affect how you build programs and plans.
Once you have defined what it is that you’re attempting to achieve, you’re ready to get started with creating a plan. You will start by selecting the Plans category in the header menu in JIRA. A list will pop up, and you’ll want to click ‘Create…’.
A window will pop up, giving you the option to create a ‘Plan’ or a ‘Program’. In the case of Program Management (with already existing Project Plans), you’ll want to select ‘Program’, and ‘Create’.
Note: Have your plans already created before you create a program.
You will have the option to create a Program name, which in our example of a product, would be the name of the product. You’ll also have the option to set permissions in terms of who is able to see this roadmap. And finally, you’ll be able to link all of the existing plans that you created to this Program. Once you’re done, you’ll hit the ‘Create’ button and your new program will load.

Note: Both plans and permissions can be adjusted after creating a Program.

If you don’t see any of your issue types in the ‘schedule’ view, adjust the issue type filter that you’re using. If your plans only have Epics, you’ll want to adjust the issue type to show Epics. See below image.

Note: If you need to adjust the plans and permissions, you can click the three dots beside your program name, and go to ‘Configure’.
