Managing OKRs keeps your business on track.

What are OKRs?

OKR stands for: Objectives and Key Results. Coined by Intel in the 1970s, and popularized by Google in the 2000s, OKRs are a goal-setting framework. The idea is to set clear, measurable goals (or ‘Objectives’), and track the progress towards these objectives, by using quantifiable metrics (or ‘Key Results’).

By setting and regularly reviewing OKRs, your organization can stay focused on their most important priorities, and drive progress towards long-term vision.

1. Setup and document your OKRs

First, you'll need to define your OKRs and make sure they are aligned with your organization's goals and values.
This can be achieved via a top-down process, (leaders define OKRs and cascade them down through the organization), or a bottom-up process (teams contribute their own OKRs).

2. Create a Jira project/repository

Once you've defined your OKRs, you'll need to create a Jira project to track them. This can be a new project or an existing one, depending on your organization's needs. You'll want to set up the project with all the necessary fields, such as objective, key results, and progress metrics, as well as any custom fields you may need.

3. Assign OKRs to team members

Next, you'll want to assign OKRs to the appropriate team members. This can be done through the Jira project, or you can use a separate tool like Trello or Asana to manage OKRs.
As part of assigning OKRs, it important to ensure you have a connected approach for managing the downstream work.

4. Track progress and review regularly

The key to successful OKR implementation is regular review and tracking of progress. Use Jira to track progress on key results and update the status of objectives as needed. Schedule regular review meetings to discuss progress, identify any challenges or roadblocks, and adjust course as necessary.

Level-up your OKRs

Once you’ve created a repository for storing OKRs and a cadence for reviewing them, future opportunities may include:

  • Build a template for the Description field, in order to drive consistency of definition
  • Standardize sizing methodology (e.g. t-shirt sizing, WSJF, etc.)
  • Consider workflow options (e.g. low friction approach using ALL transitions vs. linear, process driven)
  • Enhance reporting and dashboard solutions leveraging marketplace add-ins

Connect Strategy to Execution

Once your OKRs are documented and stored in Jira, it is important to plan how you will connect execution to strategy.

Jira can also be used to manage initiatives, which are larger, longer-term projects that support the achievement of your organization’s goals. To implement initiatives in Jira, you can follow a similar process: define the initiative, create a Jira project, assign tasks to team members, and track progress.

We typically don’t tell teams how to do their work, and let them leverage the Jira tools in their own ways. What we do guide them on though, is how to connect data across Jira projects, the importance of standards, and breaking down cross-functional silos.
