Should you be using Jira or Monday.com for project management? Both products are project management tools that can help teams organize their work, collaborate, and track progress. However, they have different features, strengths, and weaknesses, and the choice between them depends on the specific needs and preferences of your team.

Key Differences between Jira and Monday.com

Jira and Monday.com are both popular, flexible project management tools but there are key differences between the two. Ranging from user interface and ease of use to complexity and level of flexibility, take a look at the key differences to see which tool is better suited for your organization.

User interface and ease of use

Implementing new tools are difficult, especially when it comes to ensuring that user adoption rates are high and that users feel comfortable using the new tool. It makes it a lot easier to meet these objectives when tools have intuitive user interface and are easy to use. Although both tools are easy to use and have good user interfaces, Monday.com is known for its user-friendly interface compared to Jira.

Because Monday.com was purpose built for project management for a wide variety of teams, it makes it easier for non-Software development teams to adopt the tool. In comparison, Jira Software was originally created for Software development teams, making their focus and design practices geared towards those types of teams.

The key differences between the tools are when it comes to set up and maintenance. Jira offers more flexibility in how it can be set up, which adds to the complexity of set up and maintenance. Jira offers templates that users can choose from but allows for customization including custom workflows, issues, and fields. If your organization is new to using tools like Jira, starting off with a simple template and slowly evolving is the way to go here.

Workflow customization

Jira is highly customizable and can be adapted to fit almost any workflow or project management methodology, from Agile to Waterfall. Monday.com offers some customization options, but its workflows are generally more structured and may not be as flexible as Jira’s.

Because of its flexibility, administrators can set up change management practices / approval processes as well, tying in change management practices to project management processes in one singular tool.

Integration options

Jira offers a wide range of integrations with other tools, such as development and testing tools, whereas Monday.com has fewer integration options but still covers most popular tools. One benefit of using Jira over Monday.com, is that if your development teams are using Jira for issue tracking, you can easily add the work that they’re doing to your project schedules. In that way, you’ll have the most up-to-date information regarding where work is at and can get more accurate information on timelines and deadlines for pieces of work.

Users can explore Atlassian’s marketplace as well to see the wide variety of marketplace apps that is available to Jira users.

Pricing

Jira’s pricing is more complex than Monday.com’s, which offers a flat monthly fee for unlimited users. Jira’s pricing is based on the number of users and the type of plan you choose, with additional fees for add-ons and plugins.
